Text Box: QUESTIONS

It is important that parents understand the treatment program is 14 weeks long and that the best treatment intervention comes from completing the program.

As a parent, there will be times when you just want to bring your child home, but consider the following questions:

1. Why does my child say he/she is unhappy?

This is very common during the first month of treatment. Youth are beginning to detoxify and are often feeling very homesick. It is important at this time to offer them support, but encourage them to complete the treatment program.

2. My son/daughter has not used drugs/alcohol for a month, he/she is finished treatment right?

The treatment process is a lengthy one, many youth can stop using easily while in residential treatment by one month into treatment, they still have issues to deal with. The fact they haven’t used is excellent, however this does not mean they are ready to come home. The best success happens when the treatment is followed through to completion.

3. Can I call or write my child while they are in treatment?

Absolutely. Calls are restricted for the first week to allow for stabilization. After that the Centre encourages you to call at least once per week after 6pm. A phone schedule will be setup with your child during the first week of the program to allow for 2 calls per week.

Mailing letters and cards is encouraged. It is very helpful to the treatment process to receive cards and letters of encouragement from friends and family. You will have the responsibility to keep positive contact.

4. Can I visit my child during treatment?

Yes. Visits are encouraged, but have to be prearranged with the Centre’s Program Coordinator. If you are going to be in the area, please call first to ensure the group is not away on an activity.
